Project justification
Tamale is the capital of Ghana’s Northern Region. With a population of around 400,000 it is Ghana’s third largest city by population after Accra and Kumasi. The city is served by Tamale International Airport, located some 15km north of the centre. The airport became an international airport following the extension of its runway to 3.5 km in 2013-2016.
QGMI scope of work includes the following:
- Terminal building with approx. 5000 m² with scope for expansion, with a capacity of 200 passengers in each direction, 8 check-in counters and 4 self-service check-in counters, and 2 boarding gates.
- Airport Management System and Equipment for integrated passenger and baggage processing.
- Multi-purpose Hajj Facility.
- Car parking.
- Access and local roads.
- Landside and Airside infrastructure adapted to the Terminal size.
- Water, power, and sewerage infrastructure necessary for operations.
- Power supply.
- Environmental and social impact assessment, including permitting and livelihood restoration plan.
We are working with British suppliers and manufacturers to build and fit out this phase of this important airport expansion.
The airport’s expansion is being carried out in line with the IFC Environmental and Social Performance Standards. This includes the implementation of a Livelihood Restoration Plan by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), to adequately compensate landowners and users and support them in restoring their primarily land-based livelihoods. In addition, the project has a dedicated Community Liaison Officer to engage with communities and respond to any concerns they may have.
